One veteran’s quest to unlock everyone’s inner athlete.

New York Personal Fitness was established in 2003 as a boutique personal training studio in the heart of Flatiron, New York, and Rui acquired it in January of 2017. She’s in the midst of transforming it into a 360° health and fitness center, and has partnered with Canopy to make sure that her staff is protected with personal trainer insurance.

“We are on our way to becoming a fully integrated health and fitness facility. We currently have a massage therapist, a stretch therapist, a dietitian, a naturopath doctor, a personal chef, and an on-site physical therapy practice that includes chiropractic and acupuncture. We will continue to add to our list of services so that we can best meet the needs of our clients. We believe that integration is what provides the best results.”

A goal of overall health

The move to a more well-rounded approach to fitness makes sense, given that Rui’s background is in the US Army and that she has years of previous fitness experience. Rui is working to apply her skill set to better the lives of others.

“I am a certified personal trainer by the National Academy of Sports Medicine with a specialization in corrective exercise (injury prevention), and a US Army Reserve veteran. I have worked in fitness for the past 7 years, and have made it my personal mission to help others get out of pain and live injury free. I got into the fitness industry because of my own experiences with injuries in the military, and have learned over the years that the single most effective way to prevent getting hurt is to build strength.”

An individualistic approach

NYPT is designed to meet the needs of individuals; not to make everyone work out the same way. Depending on the client’s abilities and experience, training can many forms. NYPT has trainers who are experts in boxing, kickboxing, powerlifting, Olympic weightlifting, kettlebells, high-intensity interval training, and injury prevention.

“NYPT is about community. We believe that everyone needs help, and no single practitioner has all of the answers. Having a full staff of trainers who work closely with other health professionals to create the best possible plan for success for our clients is something that is currently very unique for NYC.”

Focus on growth

This approach to fitness stems from Rui’s personal approach to training. She’s worked to create a fitness center where the client’s growth is prioritized.

“Seeing the progress people make over time. When I am able to help someone with chronic pain walk efficiently again, or when someone who was terrified of weights before is performing barbell weights now, it reaffirms my career decision and my vision for NYPT.”
