Tree trimming can win you bigger bids, but only if your insurance keeps up. This quick guide tells you exactly what policy you need, what each additional coverage does, and how to be ready for any job that comes your way.

Quick Note: Certain types of removals and stump work may not be included in current coverages. We’re working to expand coverage, so keep an eye out for updates. Until then, make sure to check your policy before starting riskier work.

What Is Tree Service Insurance and What’s Covered?

Tree service insurance is an add-on to your general liability policy that expands coverage for third-party claims tied specifically to tree work.

That means pruning, cutting, and shaping shrubs and trees up to 30 feet in height are covered, along with the use of dust or chemicals for tree trimming. However, all dust and chemicals must be compliant with local laws.

Note: Coverage excludes stump grinding, removals, arborist work, and tree trimming within 15ft of power lines.

Does My Tree Service Business Need Insurance?

Put simply: Yes. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting your tree business, insurance is a must-have to keep your company protected. A single accident could cost thousands, and without the right coverage, you could be left footing the bill.

Some homeowners, property managers, and HOAs may require proof of insurance before hiring you, and having your COI ready is a great way to earn their trust and their business. Tree service insurance also gives you peace of mind that if the unexpected happens, your entire season isn’t put on hold.

Take a quick look at your services and make note of any of the following that apply:

If you said yes to all five, tree service insurance covers the scope of your trimming work.

What Types of Tree Service Insurance Coverage Do I Need?

Tree work is more than just trimming branches. You’re also traveling to jobs, loading and unloading equipment, and processing customer payments — and each of those steps comes with extra risk.

Your base general liability policy for landscapers protects you against third-party injury and property damage claims, but optional add-ons cover more specific risks.

Here’s a breakdown of the coverages most landscapers and tree trimmers need:

Data breaches, ransomware, and recovery costs

Tree Service Insurance FAQs

Should I still get insurance if I’m a solo tree service operator?

Absolutely. Claims happen regardless of crew size. Whether you run a large team or work solo, the right coverage protects your business and your wallet. It also gives clients confidence that they’ve hired the right person for the job.

Not by default. Tree service insurance covers tree work up to 30 ft., but aerial lifts, rigging, and cranes are higher-risk methods. If your work involves climbing, bucket trucks, or rigging, reach out to our team of U.S.-based, licensed agents at 844.520.6993.

You can get your Certificate of Insurance (COI) immediately after purchasing a policy. It’s available in your online dashboard 24/7 for printing, emailing, or downloading whenever you need it for a client or contract.

Note: Before you send your COI, double-check the job’s insurance requirements, like the liability limits, whether an additional insured is needed, and any special wording the client requires.

You can file a claim directly from your dashboard. Just log in and fill out the claims form with details of the incident. Once submitted, a claims adjuster will contact you to review the claim and guide you through the next steps. Keep any documents, photos, police reports, or receipts handy in case the adjuster needs additional information.

Yes — once your policy is active, you can log in to your dashboard and add contractors, property managers, and even cities as additional insureds. Make sure you review your policy or contact your agent if you have questions about adding cities or large contractors to your policy.
