Manufacturing Insurance

Whether you design it, build it, or ship it — we protect your business from production-related risks.

What is Manufacturing Insurance?

Manufacturing insurance is designed to protect your business from the hefty expenses of liability claims. It can cover costly claims tied to injuries, damages, or defects — including issues with products you design, label, create, or assemble.

Manufacturing insurance helps protect the business you’re building, whether you’re crafting products by hand or running a full production line. Instead of worrying about what could go wrong, you can focus on getting your product out the door and into the world.

Who Needs Manufacturing Insurance?

If your company manufactures physical products, this coverage is crucial for protecting your business. The top manufacturing industries we cover include:

Why Do I Need Manufacturers Insurance?

As a manufacturer, you’re on the front lines of product responsibility. Defects can occur even with rigorous quality control. You can be held liable for injuries or damages caused by your products, regardless of fault — but you don’t have to go it alone.

Real-life risks, covered.

Retailer requirements

A store won’t stock your products without proof of liability insurance. Having coverage means you’re always ready to meet vendor requirements and keep your products on shelves.

Product malfunction

A customer is injured by a product you made. Your policy helps cover legal defense, medical costs, and damages.

Labeling error

Incorrect usage instructions lead to an allergic reaction. Insurance helps cover treatment costs and protects your brand name.

Contaminated packaging

A production issue triggers a recall. Product recall insurance can help cover related costs, legal claims, and third-party damages.

A single lawsuit could disrupt your operations, drain your savings, and hurt your reputation. The right insurance helps you stay protected, meet vendor compliance requirements, and keep your products moving.

How Much Does Manufacturing Insurance Cost?

On average, the cost of manufacturing insurance ranges from $700 to $3,000 per year for small to mid-sized manufacturers. Your cost will depend on your business’:

  • Annual revenue
  • Level of risk
  • Product types
  • Claims history
  • Coverage limits needed
  • Additional coverages

To get an accurate quote, our agents assess what you make, how you make it, and who uses it. The good news? The right policy pays for itself the moment something goes wrong.

Manufacturers Insurance Coverage for Small Businesses

With Insurance Canopy, manufacturers insurance protects you against accidents and product-related claims. It includes both general and product liability insurance, with up to $1 million in coverage per claim (occurrence) and $2 million total per policy year (aggregate).

Need more protection? Licensed agents are ready to help you customize your policy with higher limits and any additional coverage your business needs. Our customer support is rated nearly 5 stars — they just want to help you get the best plan in place for your business!

Included

General Liability Insurance can cover third-party injury and property damage claims that happen on your premises or as a result of your business operations. If a contractor gets hurt at your facility or while handling your products, this coverage helps pay for medical bills, legal costs, and more.

Product Liability Insurance has your back if something goes wrong with what you make, even after it’s left your hands. It helps cover legal fees, medical bills, and repair costs if a product you manufactured causes harm or damage. Most claims we see involve things like manufacturing defects, design issues, or missing labels and warnings.

Recommended Add-ons

Product Recall Insurance helps you act fast if something needs to be pulled from the market. If you discover a product may cause harm, this insurance helps with notifying customers, shipping returns, disposal — even crisis management.

Commercial Property Insurance protects the space and stuff you rely on to keep production moving. It can pay for damage or loss to your building, tools, equipment, raw materials, and finished products, whether you own or lease your workspace. From burst pipes to broken machines, this policy helps you bounce back fast.

Workers Compensation Insurance helps take care of your team if someone gets hurt on the job. It covers things like medical bills, lost wages, and recovery costs — whether someone on your team has back strain from lifting or hearing loss from noisy equipment. It also helps protect your business from lawsuits.

Plus, in most states, workers comp is legally required if your business has employees.

Inland Marine Insurance helps protect your tools, equipment, and products while they’re on the move or used away from your main location. Whether you’re shipping parts to a client, working off-site, or hauling equipment like mobile tools or storage units, this coverage helps protect what your regular property policy might not.

Cyber Liability Insurance helps cover the fallout from cyberattacks, data breaches, and other digital threats. If your network is hacked or customer info gets stolen, it can help pay for things like legal fees, customer notifications, credit monitoring, and PR efforts to protect your brand.

Commercial Auto Insurance helps protect vehicles your business owns or uses, including company trucks, delivery vans, or cars. It covers repairs, medical bills, and legal costs if there’s an accident. It can also help if the vehicle is stolen or vandalized.

Note: If you transport goods or equipment, your state might require you to have this coverage.

Hired and non-hired auto insurance covers vehicles your business uses but doesn’t own, like an employee’s car used for deliveries or a rented van for transporting equipment. If there’s an accident while using one of these vehicles for work, this coverage helps pay for property damage, medical bills, or legal costs.

Manufacturers E&O Insurance protects your business if a mistake in your product design, advice, or service causes a client to lose money. If your product doesn’t perform as promised or there’s an oversight in the specs that leads to costly issues, this coverage helps pay for legal defense and settlement costs.

It’s especially important for manufacturers who provide custom work, technical designs, or professional recommendations.

Commercial Surety Bonds act like a promise that you’ll follow through on contracts or meet required regulations. If something goes wrong, it protects the other party and covers their losses. In manufacturing, surety bonds are often required to show you’re dependable and financially sound.

The Amendment of Coverage Territory endorsement extends your coverage to “anywhere in the world” to cover claims that happen outside the U.S. If you sell products internationally or your goods end up overseas, this endorsement can protect your business from lawsuits that come from incidents that happen abroad.

It’s especially helpful for manufacturers with international customers, suppliers, or distributors.

The Primary & Non-Contributory endorsement ensures that your insurance policy kicks in first to cover a claim, and that it pays out before anyone else’s (like a client’s or contractor’s policy). It’s often required in contracts when you’re working with other businesses that want to make sure your policy covers any liability before theirs does.

A Waiver of Subrogation prevents your insurance company from going after a third party (like a client, landlord, or contractor) to recover costs after a claim is paid. It’s commonly requested in contracts to keep working relationships smooth, even if someone else may have contributed to the issue.

A 30-Day Cancellation Notice notifies a third party, usually an additional insured, that your policy is going to be canceled within 30 days. It’s often required in agreements or lease contracts as a heads-up to other parties who rely on your insurance being active.

Questions About Manufacturing Insurance

What’s Included in a Standard Manufacturing Insurance Policy?

A standard manufacturing insurance policy typically includes general liability and product liability insurance to protect your business from third-party injuries, property damage, and product-related claims.

Optional add-ons can fill gaps in your coverage. Some to consider are:

  • Commercial property insurance
  • Tools and equipment (aka inland marine)
  • Products-completed operations
  • Manufacturer errors & omissions (E&O)
  • Commercial surety bonds
  • Commercial auto
  • Product recall insurance
  • Workers compensation
  • Cyber liability

Yes, you still need insurance if you manufacture products under another company’s label, like a white label or private label. Liability often follows the supply chain, not just the brand name, so you can still be held legally responsible for defects, injuries, or damages caused by someone else’s products.

Insurance helps protect your business from costly lawsuits and recalls, whether your name is on the packaging or not.

No, your inventory or equipment is not automatically covered under this policy. Our manufacturing insurance base policy includes product and general liability coverage. You need tools and equipment coverage (sometimes called inland marine insurance) or commercial property insurance to protect your valuable manufacturing equipment and business tools.

In most cases, yes, this policy will satisfy your retailer or distributor’s insurance requirements! Insurance Canopy’s manufacturers liability policy is equipped with the coverage and limits to meet most insurance requirements.

However, some partners may require higher limits or additional coverages, like product recall or named additional insureds (which we offer), so it’s important to review their specific terms to ensure full compliance.
