What is Liability Insurance for Sports Officials?
Referee and umpire liability insurance is a financial safety net designed to protect you from the costs of claims and lawsuits related to your officiating.
It combines general liability and professional liability in one policy. These coverages help pay for accidental injuries, property damage, and other harm — like tripping a player on the field or court fees from a lawsuit alleging you failed to enforce the appropriate safety rules.
Sports official insurance is designed to cover situations like these, so you don’t become permanently benched by debt or bankruptcy.
What Does Insurance for Referees and Umpires Cover?
Sports official insurance from Insurance Canopy covers physical, financial, and other harm you may unintentionally cause others. It’s available for a variety of officials, including (but not limited to) referees for:

What Does it Not Cover?
Sports official liability insurance is designed for individual referees and umpires. It does not cover leagues, camps, or sports facilities. We also do not currently cover:
- Officials affiliated with professional, semi-pro, or collegiate leagues
- Water polo referees and other officials for activities conducted in open water or in water over four feet
- Any injuries to yourself sustained while officiating
- Any harm you cause others due to illegal, intentional, or fraudulent acts
How Much Does Sports Official Insurance Cost?

Common Questions About Insurance for Referees, Umpires, and Sports Officials
Am I Covered if I Officiate Multiple Sports or Leagues?
Yes. Your Insurance Canopy policy covers you for any and all sports you officiate, as long as they are not specifically excluded from coverage (like water polo or a semi-pro league).
Why Do I Need My Own Policy if My League Has Insurance?
League insurance may only cover the organization itself and its property. If the league does include liability coverage for its coaches — that coverage may be limited.
Does This Insurance Protect Me if a Player, Coach, or Parent Sues Me?
Yes, as long as the underlying cause of the suit is covered, like claims of negligence (not taking proper action), errors in judgment (bad calls), or failure to enforce rules or safety.
