Endorsement

What Is an Insurance Endorsement?

An insurance endorsement is a form you can add to your policy to make changes or updates to your coverage.

There are many kinds of endorsements, including ones that add or expand coverages, restrict coverages, or increase coverage limits. Essentially, insurance endorsements allow you to fine-tune your policy to better fit your business.

What are Some Examples of Business Insurance Endorsements?

Endorsements are add-ons that make small adjustments to your insurance policy. Some provide additional coverages, raise limits, or cover other details required by landlords or clients.

Here are a few common endorsements and why they matter for small businesses:

Common Business Insurance Endorsements
Endorsement What It Does Why It Matters for Small Businesses
Additional Insured
Extends your coverage to apply to another qualified person or business.
Landlords, venues, or event organizers often require this before working with you.
Waiver of Subrogation
Prevents your insurance company from going after another party (like a landlord) when you were not at fault, in order to get their money back after paying a claim.
Helps maintain business relationships and may be required in contracts.
Excess Liability (aka Higher Policy Limits)
Raises the maximum amount your insurance will pay under specific coverages.
Offers more protection if your client, contracts, or landlord requires more coverage.
Coverage Extension
Adds coverage for risks not originally included (like cyber or equipment coverage).
Helps tailor protection to unique business needs without buying a separate policy.
Exclusion Endorsement
Removes or limits certain types of coverage.
Keeps costs down, but businesses should know what risks are no longer covered.

An insurance endorsement describes an update to your insurance policy. The endorsement is the form that officially changes your policy.

A certificate of insurance, on the other hand, is a snapshot of what your policy covers. It shows you have the kinds of insurance listed, and nothing more.

To add a specific endorsement onto your insurance policy, log into your online dashboard and under “Manage Policies” click on “Add endorsements” or “Change policy options.”

If you’re a new customer, you can add any available endorsements during the online application process.
