What Is E-Commerce Business Insurance?

If a product you sell, import, or manufacture causes bodily injuries or property damage, e-commerce liability insurance can help you cover the costs of the claim. Even with product testing, accidents can still happen from product defects, mislabeling, or failure to provide warnings.

Some online retailers are required or recommended to carry insurance policies. Insurance Canopy’s plans often meet or exceed requirements through our high limits, occurrence based policies, and optional additional coverages.

Do I Need Insurance For Online Sales?

Online retail business insurance protects those who wholesale, resell, or private label products on e-commerce websites such as Ebay, Etsy, and Jane. Without the right insurance, you could find yourself paying for costly claims on your own—most online marketplaces exclude themselves from being held responsible for liability claims caused by your shop or product.

Insurance Canopy helps to close the gap in coverage left by online marketplaces so you can confidently continue your online business with the protection you deserve.

How Much Does E-Commerce Insurance Cost?

Each e-commerce product insurance policy is tailored specifically to your product and business—meaning no two policies are the same, so you only pay for the coverages you need. Currently, over 50% of Insurance Canopy customers pay $1,400 or less for their annual premium.

We calculate your coverage costs based on:

Gross annual sales

The volume you sell and may impact your coverage needs and premium cost.

Some products are riskier to insure than others. Product type can vary the cost of insurance.
Past claims may impact your estimated risk and could impact your limits or premium.
Where you work and who you employ impacts coverage needs.
Some online retailers require certain insurance limits on your policy.

Add-ons such as cyber liability  or tools and equipment coverage may affect your premium.
