Liability Insurance & Who It's For

Liability insurance—you’ve probably heard this term before, but how does it apply to you as a fitness professional?
Accidents can happen all the time in the health and fitness industry. Everything from pulling a muscle during a workout, to breaking an ankle rehearsing a dance routine, and having a bad reaction to a supplement you recommended. Clients may break equipment you provided or drop a weight on the floor, leaving damage in a space you don’t own.

These types of incidents can leave you with some expensive bills to be paid, or even a lawsuit. This is where liability insurance comes in. It’s designed to help you pay for the accidental damages and injuries caused by your professional work. It can also help you repair or replace the gear and equipment you might use to run your business.

Whether you teach in a private studio, train clients online, instruct students at your home, work at multiple locations, or manage your own fitness business; liability insurance can benefit and protect you.

Common Coverages & Limits

When looking for a policy, you may be trying to meet contract obligations or find something that meets your individual needs. It’s important to know what your policy may cover you for and if there are additional policies you might want in a plan.

Not all insurance policies are created equal, which is why it’s important to do your research. The cheapest insurance plan might not always give you the best coverage options or come with low limits. Others might be over charging you for coverage you may never use. Whichever plan you choose, make sure it best fits your needs (and your budget).

Aggregate VS Occurence

Aggregate: This is the total amount your insurance carrier will pay for a claim during a policy period. Oftentimes one insurance plan will have multiple policies listed on it. They might share an aggregate limit—meaning if you have a claim for professional liability coverage and another for gear and equipment coverage, they will both deduct out of this total limit.
Each Occurrence: This is the maximum amount your insurance carrier will pay per claim you have. This number may be lower than the aggregate limit. If you have a $1,000,000 aggregate with a $500,000 each occurrence limit, that means your plan can only pay up to $500,000 for one claim at a time. Each occurrence limits can help to prevent you from maxing out on your insurance coverage all at once on a single claim so you can still have coverage the remainder of the year.
