A basic insurance policy will only have general liability insurance, which can cover simple claims for incidents like a client tripping over a rug at the entrance of your studio. However, a great policy should also offer coverage for professional liability, tools and equipment, and diet or nutritional advice. These coverages can help pay for claims of accidents that occur during a training session or from a client following instructions you gave them.
Your client trusts your training and advice, but if they were to tear a muscle during a workout or have an allergic reaction to a pre-workout you recommended, you could be held responsible. Whether you use your own equipment at a private studio or what is provided in a gym, you are accountable for covering the cost of any damaged or stolen equipment.

Professional liability insurance protects you in case of malpractice or negligence, meaning if you do something wrong and harm or injure your client during a training session.
Having an additional insured means you are extending your policy’s coverage to another person or organization who could be named in a claim caused by your negligence. If you are responsible for a client’s injury during a session, and they decide to sue, both you and your additional insured could be covered for the cost of the claim.
You can add property management, businesses, or HOA’s to your insurance policy. If you do in-home training, you could add your HOA as an additional insured. Or, if you are training someone in a privately owned gym, you can add that gym as an additional insured. Some written contracts or employment agreements may require you to obtain an insurance policy with additional insureds.
One additional insured is $15, whereas an unlimited amount of additional insureds is $30. You can select the amount of additional insureds you would like to add when you are filling out your personal trainer insurance application.
Additional insured status cannot be granted to a friend or co-worker as an extension of your policy. Each individual must purchase their own policy to obtain liability coverage.
Yes! Even when someone is training in their own home without you physically present, they can still get hurt. Because they are following your instructions, you could be held liable for any injuries they sustain or personal property they damage.
